Valerian , also known as garden valerian, garden heliotrope and all-heal (Valeriana officinalis), is derived from the Latin word valere (to be healthy, to be well, to be strong). The active substance of this plant is contained in its roots – Valerianae radix. Its efficiency was known as early as in the ancient times. Roman and Greek physicians used it for digestion disorders and to encourage the excretion of water (diuretic). In the mid-18th century, valerian was recognised as a tranquiliser. Generally, valerian has a sedating effect and is an important natural medicine which helps to relieve stress, sadness, fear and anxiety. It is recommended in treatment of infections, concentration difficulties, motor disorders, anxiety, morning stomach ache and headache without organic causes.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm , or melissa (Melissa officinalis) is a well-known nectar bearing plant. None of the plants attracts bees so much as melissa; hence its Croatian name. The active substances of lemon balm are contained in its leaf – Melissae folium. Its medicinal properties were known as early as in the ancient times. It has been found to be good for the heart and is used as a calming agent. It is also claimed that lemon balm gives new strength to the body and encourages pleasant thoughts. The Arab physicians used to call it „the grass for the heart and cheerfulness“. They also discovered that it was effective against "black thoughts, anxiety, spasms, nervous headache, which becomes more and more important in the contemporary way of life with unavoidable stress... Lemon balms was also introduced in monastery medicines. Since 1611 the so-called Carmelite water, made of lemon balm! This nature’s gift has soothing, antiviral and antibacterial properties and is therefore a strong synergic partner to valerian.


Hop (Humulus lupulus) has been increasingly in use today. In the past, it was used by the Delaware Indians against earache or toothache. Today it is acknowledged a wide spectrum of properties; it is used as a sedative, antiseptic, bactericide, spasmolytic, diuretic, antipyretic, digestion soother, antioxidant… It is recommended against inflammations, insomnia, neuroses, rheumatism, spasms, digestion disorders, depression… In recent times it has been discovered that its active substance lupulin (lupulones - an essential oil) increases lactation; in some countries it is, therefore, recommended to nursing mothers.
